VDOT and Waze share highway data

My name is Dani Simons, I’m the Head of Public Partnerships at Waze. Waze has a very robust data-sharing program called Waze for Cities that’s intended for
government partners around the world. VDOT has access to data that is generated
through both Waze’s system around traffic speeds and also data that Waze users report,
we share that in aggregate with VDOT. In return, VDOT shares with us information
about road closures and major traffic events, and we help push that information back out
to all the people who use Waze to navigate. Our users like to know that the data that they’re sharing is
actually being used to make the community around them better, And I think when you see cases like that where the
government is actually taking some of these big data sets, taking some of these crowd-sourced data sets, and
putting them to use to improve the lives of the residents, it’s kind of the best of what’s happening right now.
