A few weeks ago I received my second musical award for the best female lead. Yes fantastic. I mean .. the second one too. One can be a fluke but .. I thought the same thing about ‘oh I don’t think it’s a coincidence anymore’. – No, that’s true. Hey hello welcome to Vocal TV at the
program ‘Behind the artist’. And I”ll have a super nice conversation today
with none other than Renée van Wegberg .. ..and Renée is a musical actress. In addition, also a great
singer. The most musical actresses are great singers but in addition to the musical work she also does a lot of solo work. And I’m going to ask her the proverbial ‘shirt off the body’. Ladies and gentlemen … Renée van Wegberg. Yes! Hey Renée how nice that you are here.
Awesome. I have something nice for you. I brought a game. – Okay.
Do you know it or not? It is Jenga. Yes I think I know it. We are going to pull blocks out right? Yes. We will first build the tower and after that we will draw blocks from it. And the person who has drawn the last block and the tower falls over has officially lost it. And he has to run a circle around the building. Hang on. What do I win? No you win nothing but it is more for fun. Then we have something to do during .. And I also think it is a nice symbolic game because this represents the chaos, at least in my head. And then we build it into a structured tower and then before you know it … you pull some blocks out .. ..and then the whole mess thunders again. And it might also be good to have a look .. .. how it goes with you and
how it went with you in your career. Because you currently have a thriving career as they call it. I think it’s going very well. Well, we mainly hear that from you. And I’m curious. But in the meantime we are building
this game up. Let’s here .. this is the basics. And then we have to place 3 blocks on top of it until the tower is complete. That’s clear. – Allright, Renée .. How are you? That might be a good one to ask. – Nice to start this way. But good, good .. very good yes. Are you happy? – Yes I am happy. I slowly relax. I have had a very busy period with
work and that is of course very nice. If that goes well. – What have you done in the past period? Well the last period I have toured with a song program. “Renée van Wegbergen sings List, Shaffy, Piaf.” Songs by Liesbeth List, Ramses Shaffy and Edith Piaf. Yes and that was a success in many ways. The venues were full and it was my first.. ..kind of one woman show. Yes. Well kind of? – Yes that was it. Yes no .. I had a very cool band and two boys there also sang a number of songs. So I had a lot of support from them. Because if I have understood correctly … if I have read correctly, have you done a lot of productions for this? Yes. – But then you were part of,
for example, a musical production right? Yes often yes. Or also .. I have done a number of song programs and also plays .. ..only then you are kind of a small spil
in the whole machine. That was now also the case, by the way, but I had much more artistic freedom to put my own stamp on it .. ..and give it its own twist. But it didn’t hurt you because you are a very successful musical actress, can we say? Well a few weeks ago .. I got to pick up my second musical award .. ..for best female lead. So it’s going well. – Yes, fantastic. I mean .. the second one too. One can be a fluke, but … – I thought the same thing. “Oh, I don’t think it’s a coincidence anymore.” – It’s true if you do something twice .. I always say: once is coincidence but twice then something is happening. And apparently that is true. You have to
well.. that is quite special. – Yes, that’s crazy. The highest achievable in the Netherlands for a musical actress? – Yes in this area. Certainly yes. But then the question is: what now? Because you have two now. Okay soon is the .. .. mantelpiece full of awards. – Yes.
But is there more? Is there more where Renée van Wegberg .. … is looking for? Besides that you will now do a solo show again. Are there any other things where you ..? Well that solo show is not unimportant. I .. – By the way, we have to remove blocks. – Yes. Do you do the first or me? And then everything goes. So .. And on! You pull the first one out. – Yes? Okay. – I don’t think he can fall over yet. Oh you also do the middle right. – Oh do I have to pick from the top? – No no no. Very well. Yes, of course yes. And then you have to put it on top. And then we do it so that it gets higher. And then it becomes more and more unstable. Well you actually have me .. Then I can’t play this. But I have a loose one here so that goes well. But yes so tell .. What are you still planning in the future? Look, it’s really cool to
transform into another character .. ..and tell a different story. So
with a costume with a wig and singing songs. That is really great and I would like to continue to do so. But as I said, that solo performance, I want more of that. Because in that song program from
List, Shaffy, Piaf I also have some own stories .. .. and my own arrangements
used for those songs and yes. I noticed that I thought it was really cool to
and.. In the meantime, we will continue. But that also the public
could appreciate and those songs were resonating in a different way.
That they got to see something of mine. Could identify with certain things that I told. – But you could also tell your own story more. Because in a musical, of course, you are placed in a frame. – Yes exactly. Yes no absolutely. So .. Whoops. – Two too. – Yes I am going fast. I don’t know if that is allowed at Jenga, but I will read the rules for a little while. No, I believe so. Put it that way differently and then you do it that way. Then it gets high faster. Then it’s more difficult. Yes but I can imagine that you desire to show your own personality. Now you are in the phase where you have songs that have already been done, but that you can adjust to your own preferences. – Yes. And if I just think chronologically .. .. then the next step should be own work or is that not an ambition? Yes for sure. I’m working on that too. I do not believe that it is necessarily the highest attainable. That then .. own songs .. I believe that so many beautiful songs have been written that express exactly .. .. what I or someone else feels or has felt. What can affect people. So I do not believe that per se .. that your own songs … that that should be the highest attainable for me. Before we finish this interview..
I really enjoy talking to you. Do you have a definition of your happiness? I guess that’s not a very easy question .. No, but something that I am working on a lot. Also in my private life. So that’s not a bad question. Ultimately it is all about.. Whoa I think this is the last one. I fear. No as much as possible what? – Yes Yes. – No, no! Only one hand! This is unfair. She got it. Okay it doesn’t matter but tell us about your happiness. – My light is slowly disappearing. Shall I move it on? – Um .. But what is happiness for you? Yes, happiness is … – Aaaaa. Lost again damn it. This is always the case with this stupid game. Yes? Do you often lose? – But you did with two hands. Anyway .. But to return to a pretty well .. ..a fierce question. Because what is your happiness? Multiple things. In the end, it is wonderful to receive applause. To have people who after a show.. ..give compliments. It is wonderful to get a lot of attention. But ultimately that is not the point. That just goes by again and then you are home again. And I am a mother and then you sit at the breakfast table with your child who says something funny. That is ultimately what it is all about and even that .. It’s really about being happy with yourself. That you are satisfied. Even if you go for a walk on your own. That you .. It must never come from the outside in the end you have to.. ..love yourself. Even if people hurt you, that is also your own self. That’s just a tricky story. And also difficult, even for me, to do that, but ultimately you determine your own happiness. And I really try to enjoy every moment. Just being in the moment and less on the road. Because yes I have been ‘on my way’ a lot and still are. So less ‘on my way’ and finishing things .. ..and not just jump to the next thing but be in the moment and enjoying it. And yes be grateful. Yes that is such an open door but.. I was at one
of the last shows by List, Chaffy, Piaf. Then I already knew that I would do a new theater tour. Then I thought: I am going to enjoy this as if this is the very last performance I will ever play. I thought: The venue is full, they enjoy the show, a great band behind me, beautiful songs .. I am so blessed to be allowed to do this. Well it has really brought you something because I also think the reason is why you win those musical awards.. ..is also because you radiate something and that is why I thought it was an interesting question to ask you. And I also hope that the viewers of Vocal TV will benefit from that. Maybe not, maybe so. It is indeed true that the younger vocalists watching this program must realize .. .. that time solves many things. – Yes, that’s a shame. Because you want to do it all right right away. And that doesn’t work. You are going to make mistakes. Also don’t be too strict on yourself. Learn from it .. What will you do differently next time? But above all, try to be kind to yourself and to others and to enjoy yourself. And to look: where is your strength? Don’t worry about the rest but follow your own path. Okay and before we finish this episode of ‘Behind the artist’.. ..I would like to ask Renée: Would you like to sing something for us? A song. We have prepared it a little bit. At least, I asked you to prepare that. A song that may have moved you to enter this profession. What song did you grab? – You never guess. You might think some diva. I was thinking that way myself. Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, those were really my examples. But a singer that I was a big fan of before, really as a little girl .. ..and that really made me sing. Shall I just sing the song? – Yes we do, a little bit then. Yes a little bit. If only I could be with you for a short while I want to ask you so much. It hurts so much Even after that time I only think To what I feel for you Oh wow. Gordon. But that is also a fantastic beautiful song. And he was a very good singer. – Oh fantastic how he sang that song was great yes. Thank you. Super beautiful. Well a nice end of this episode of ‘Behind the artist’. This was Renée van Wegberg and I look forward to seeing you next time. Subscribe now to Vocal TV.
